Harvey, "the evergreen shire", is clearly a country town, a rural community of about 5000 residents, 140 kilometers south of Perth.
Named after Major Harvey, the first man to survey the area, the town has a few buildings of historic interest, such as J. Knowles House and Store, in Harvey Street, which went up in 1890.
Rich in agriculture, with beef and dairy farming being the most obvious land uses, whilst wine, table grapes and olives have emerged as important crops in the area assisting the local economy.
There are a number of dams within the shire, making Harvey very popular with waters skiers during the warmer months.
